About Emma

Hi, I’m Emma -

copywriter, copy editor and proofreader.

I worked in research and voluntary sector settings for many years until I experienced some physical health challenges. I came to a sudden halt and realised it was time to scale back and set my own pace. So I retrained with the College of Media and Publishing, gaining Level 4 diplomas (with distinction) in copywriting, proofreading and editing.

Many of my previous roles have focused on writing and editing complex academic work in order to make it clear, engaging and understandable. I began as a researcher, gaining my PhD in 2010. Since then, I’ve worked with charities including the National Survivor User Network, Mind and the Mental Health Foundation. I have also worked with the universities of Warwick, Wolverhampton, Birmingham City and Aston.

In 2018, I followed my dream of setting up a performing arts charity and became the first CEO/Artistic Director of the wonderful Underground Lights Community Theatre. It means that I’m no stranger to writing funding bids, annual reports, strategic material, press releases, social media posts, blogs… and probably other things I have now forgotten about!

And now?

These days, I do my best work when I’m on my own sitting quietly with my laptop, the cat, and a nice cup of tea.

I’m looking forward to working with you!

My approach

I have been described as ‘the Zen copywriter’. That doesn’t mean I’m never stressed (far from it, I probably get stressed every day about something!) But years of working in high pressure environments have taught me that when work is done in a hurry, or produced in states of stress it doesn’t yield the best results for anyone. Mistakes, jargon and inaccessible language quickly creep in.

It might be tempting to use AI as a ‘quick fix’ for some seemingly invincible copy. But while AI definitely has its place in our rapidly changing world, even the most sophisticated models can produce hollow written work that lacks personality, empathy and the basic human touch needed to connect with readers. It can also generate glaring and sometimes damaging errors.

My approach is to carefully and steadily take the time your written work deserves, so you can achieve your goals and make sure that your work is as good as it can be.

And while I’m writing or editing your copy, it means that you will have more time to choose where to focus your attention, knowing that the written material is in safe, thoughtful and considered hands.

If you think I might be able to help you…
